From Bump to Pup: Capturing Pregnancy Memories with Your Dog | San Diego, CA
Congratulations on your pregnancy! This is such an exciting time in your life, and you want to remember it forever. And what better way to capture this special time than including your furry best friend in your maternity photos? Dogs are such an important part of our families, and they deserve to be in these special moments too. As a San Diego photographer, I've had the pleasure of capturing many sessions that include dogs.
Here are some tips and tricks for including your dog in your maternity photos, and I'll also discuss reasons why you may or may not want to do so.
The Family.
Meet Michelle, her husband David, their 2-year-old son Maverick (not pictured keep reading to find out why), and their furry friend Jaxx!
Originally from South Georgia, this family now resides in sunny San Diego, California. Michelle and David have known each other since they were young and reconnected years after high school before eventually getting married. They have a baby girl on the way due in June, and David is about to PCS out of the country for a year, so the family is moving back home to be with loved ones during this special time. Jaxx, their 7-year-old Chow Chow Retriever, was adopted by Michelle while she was working at a humane society back home in Georgia, and he has been her protector ever since!
The Session.
This pup, Jaxx, is also a beloved member of their family and was included in their maternity photo session. Since this family is temporarily moving back home (to be around more family) for the arrival of their newest family member, their son has already made it back to Georgia before mom and dad decided they really wanted a last-minute maternity session. While he wasn’t included in these sneak peeks, he’s surely loved and momma can’t wait to be back with him.
Location.
Santee Boulders is an EPIC location for photo sessions. I have photographed here dozens of times and it never gets old. Be prepared for a little hike though!
Why should you include your dog in maternity photos?
Dogs are loyal companions who provide unconditional love and support during all stages of life. They are often the first "child" in the family, so it's only natural to want them to be a part of your maternity photos. Including your dog in your photos is a great way to celebrate your family as a whole, and it's a fun and unique way to add some personality and character to your photos.
Tips for including your dog in maternity photos:
Plan ahead: Make sure to schedule your photo session during a time when your dog is usually calm and well-behaved. Also, communicate with your photographer ahead of time so they can plan accordingly. 2. Incorporate props: Use props such as signs or bandanas to showcase your dog's personality and announce their "big brother/sister" status.
Have treats and toys on hand: These can help keep your dog focused and entertained during the photo shoot.
Use positive reinforcement: Reward your dog with treats and praise for good behavior during the photo shoot.
Protip: If the area is a leash-enforced zone, bring a basic Leash/collar, or use a short leash like this one.
Reasons to consider not including your dog in maternity photos:
Safety concerns: If your dog has a history of aggression or is not well-trained, it may be best to skip including them in your photos to avoid any safety issues. Additionally, some areas do not allow animals - easy answer.
Stressful for your dog: Some dogs may become stressed or anxious in a new environment or around unfamiliar people. If your dog falls into this category, it may be best to leave them at home.
Personal preference: Ultimately, the decision to include your dog in your maternity photos is a personal one. If you don't feel comfortable or don't think it will add to the overall experience, it's okay to skip it.

Ending notes.
Looking for a unique way to add some personality and character to your maternity photos? Consider including your loyal dog, who has provided unconditional love and support during all stages of life. However, before you do, it's important to plan ahead and make sure your dog is calm and well-behaved during the photo session. Using props and positive reinforcement can also help make the experience enjoyable for your furry friend. On the other hand, if your dog has a history of aggression, becomes stressed in new environments, or you simply don't feel comfortable, it's okay to skip including them in your photos.
